Natural home remedies: coping with stressPanaeolmic Syndrome: the Chronic Disease of the WindIn today's toxic world, many of our adults exhibit symptoms which progress to become arthritis, lupus, bursitis, asthma, migraines, cancer, or one of the many other diseases we call disorders of the immune system. Some suggest these immune system disorders are a result of responses of the primordial id. Our own body is making us sick, as a result of physical and emotional trauma. It is these id-generated symptoms and diseases that we call “Panaeolmic Syndrome.” (Pan-ell-mick). They are Pan, or “across all”, and they are carried by the mythic god of the wind, Aeolus. They seem to come from nowhere and impact everywhere. The primordial idThe primordial id is part of our neurological system. In each of us, it remains forever a child, and it speaks to us in childish ways. “Do I have to pound this into your head?” the primordial id says, as the migraines begin. “Do I have to twist your left arm?” it says, as we feel the pangs of angina. “Do I have to cut you off at the knees?” it says, as our knees buckle and we fall. “Do I have to knock you out?” it says, as we crumble in exhaustion. “Do I have to scare you silly?” it says, as we wake sweating from a nightmare. “Why are you so stubborn that you make me pull teeth?” it says, as we feel excruciating mouth pain. “Are you losing touch?” it says, as the tips of our fingers go numb. “What? You won’t quit that aggravating job without a reason? I’ll give you a reason.” It says, as we face crippling disability. The inner id is that primitive survival mechanism of nature, which represents the child in each of us. Like Peter Pan, it never grows up. It manifests its desires outwardly in our bodies, although our conscious mind may never know what the inner mind controls. The word “Panaeolmic” comes from the Greek myth of the god Aeolus, who carried fortune in with the wind. For those who have Panaeolmic Syndrome, or any of us who have the symptoms of a weakened immune system, the inner child is communicating an important message. It is telling us we must return to the basics of life and get in touch with our true nature. While many people have a tolerance level for the toxins of today’s life, Panaeolmics don’t. And who is a Panaeolmic? Eventually, we could see it in everybody. As our lives move farther away from nature, more and more people are exhibiting “allergic” symptoms. While the symptoms of widespread “allergy” were nearly unheard of in the 1950s, most American families have an allergic family member today. In fact, doctors of today have begun classifying these allergic symptoms under the term “asthma”. Although “asthma” was a disease limited primarily to children in the 1950’s, it has the appearance of an American epidemic in the 21st century. Back to NatureThe primordial id requires a solid connection with the basics of nature in order to keep the immune system operating and balanced. In “the old days,” people farmed, gardened, stewed, steamed, boiled, smoked, and baked their food from scratch, using heat from fires and ovens, not microwaves. The food we ate had one thing universally in common – it always had a mother! “Natural flavoring”, made from chemicals in a laboratory in New Jersey, had not been invented. Food had natural flavoring because nature put it there. It didn’t grow tasteless and require flavor to be injected! Natural flavor came from the essence of the plants themselves. These plant essences, or essential oils, are the nature-defined survival mechanisms of the plant. They are concentrated droplets of rich nutrients, produced to help the plant fend off predators, or attract mates. They are produced to help the plant deal with the stressors in its growing life. When we eat plants filled with these defensive essences, we are helped to deal with our life stresses, too. Today’s factory farms, however, use chemicals to defeat the plant’s natural enemies. The plant, protected by chemicals, no longer needs to produce its own defenses. As a result, the factory farmed food, unlike organic produce, does not necessarily have the concentration of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, which are inherent in the plant’s essential, defensive oils. Why? Because the oils are produced in response to stress! Plants raised in a stress-free environment instead of nature’s cycle of biological life, don’t need to produce the nutrient density required under stress! Nature must prevail, for all to be balanced. Those perfectly round oranges, all the same size, contain far less Vitamin C than the ugly, variable-sized ones. Nature loves diversity. When our grocery stores carry perfect fruit, our fruit carries little nutrition. The more closely growing conditions follow the balance of nature, the more nutrient dense will be the resultant produce. This is why organic produce, ugly as it may be, is far more beautiful on the inside, where essential oils make it nutritious. A failure to connect with nature creates Panaeolmic Syndrome. As our air becomes more polluted, our food more adulterated, and our lives more disconnected from the cycles of agriculture, Panaeolmic Syndrome progresses toward Panaeolmic Epidemic. Until we each decide to return to living in balance with our nature, the disease will spread. In ourgrandchildren’s lives, a large portion of our population will be Panaeolmic. The toxins and poisons in our food supply will be a worse terror and a more insidious killer than any war. As we examine our family medicine cabinets, noting the number of pills each family member takes, we can see that America is getting sicker. Statistics from the World Health Organization confirm it. The United States of America pays more per person in health care and gets less active and healthy life span than any other industrialized nation. Our life stresses, our processed food, and our hurry to eat it are causing the bell to toll for our prosperous society. As much as we desire to stop it, we feel helpless in the face of our daily demands. Our grocery stores sell the stuff of “normal” American eating. Our families like it and want to eat it. We don’t have time to do anything else. For the most part, we don’t know HOW to do anything else. So we just eat it. And then we wonder why we have arthritis, bursitis, and diabetes, so young.
