I really like this book's dedication: "To all the people who get up in the morning and dread going to work." I certainly remember how this felt. Always feeling stuck doing things I hated. I realized that the people I was working for had simply thought through a way to earn a living....and then hired guys like me to do much of the work for them. Why didn't I just figure it out myself?

From the start, the book is a step-by-step explanation of how to become independent. Easy to read, each chapter lays out the details for starting a business from how much money you need, how to form partnerships, and what kind of legal precautions to take to protect yourself. Usually books like this often feel full of hype and delusion, but "Getting a Life" has it's feet firmly on the ground. The author has either done the research or more likely speaks from experience.

I know running my own business that it takes an incredible amount of hard work, some lucky breaks, and plenty of persistence (and missteps!) But the point is to own my own time, and to be doing something that earns me a living yet doesn't feel like work. I wish I had had a book like this to walk me through the process. Would have saved me a lot of time. It's like having a friend who knows what she's talking about and will patiently answer every little question you have on starting a business. Invaluable.
